Refract is a curatorial project presenting a site-specific sculpture and activation by Charlotte Hailstone, launching during Miami Art Week 2026, organized by Fresh Kills Fine Art and Micaela Elle Art Advisory.
Hailstone works in large-scale translucent plastic, building forms that are physically fixed but perceptually unstable. As light moves through the surface, it casts color and shadow beyond the object itself, landing on the surrounding environment and onto the people within it. The viewer is not a spectator. They are part of the work.
Installed in dialogue with open air, shifting light, and the textures of the beach, the work is inseparable from its surroundings. Sand, water, sky, and sun become active elements, absorbed into the sculpture and projected back outward in color and shadow that change hour by hour.
Rooted in Op Art, Josef Albers' color studies, and the Light and Space movement, the work is grounded in a simple but vertiginous idea: that perception is never neutral, never stable, and never complete. What you see is always a function of where you are, what time it is, and who else is standing nearby.
Charlotte Hailstone (b. 1994, Baltimore) is a New York-based artist working across painting and sculpture. Her practice is built on a single persistent tension: the gap between what an object is and what it appears to be. Introduced to conservation and material history through her father's work restoring antique furniture at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Hailstone developed an early sensitivity to how objects accumulate meaning beyond their function. She brings that precise formal intelligence to work that is anything but fixed. Refract is the largest realization of that vision yet.
